Day 2 - Arrival in Cairo

After a lot of walking, we arrived at the correct terminal in London - Heathrow. There were lots of people in the waiting area. It would take hundreds of Jamestown waiting areas to hold this crowd. Although we have tried sushi before, I have been hesitant to try it again. The GO! Sushi restaurant in the waiting lounge was too irresistible, I had to try it. They put the food in covered dishes and a conveyer system moves the dishes around to the tables. Kim still doesn’t like sushi. (Kim: It tastes like the dead fish you smell on the beach!)

The flight to Cairo was much more enjoyable than the previous flight. We had much more room in the emergency aisle seats. Guess what, the bag from Minneapolis was not there! Every time we asked the baggage claim people, they couldn’t understand how the bag originated in Minneapolis, since we never flew there.

We met our representative, Sagy El Halawany, from Aerocontact Travel at the airport. After a long drive, we arrived at our hotel. One of the things we noticed on our drive was the lines on the road were merely a suggestion. Even though there were three lanes, most times the cars were four wide going in each direction. At one point, one lane was totally blocked off as people were standing on a bridge fishing in the Nile. We have been told not to even stick our hands in the water as it is so polluted, yet these people were fishing from the river. At one point we saw a car alongside this busy highway with three large dogs crowed together on the roof.

We were exhausted by the time we checked-in to the hotel at 1:00 am, we had been traveling for more than 26 hours. Tonight we are staying at the Mena House Oberoi. When it is daylight, we should be able to see the pyramids. It was originally a hunting lodge of King Khedive Ismail. After the Suez Canal opened, he enlarged so he could invite more guests. After a few years, it was sold and converted into a hotel.
